EARLY LIFE

Oprah Winfrey's Early Life

Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29th, 1954 on an isolated farm in Kosciusko Mississippi. Oprah Winfrey had a pretty tough childhood. After she was born, her parents separated before they were even married. Oprah was left in the care of her grandma. As Oprah lived on an isolated farm in Mississippi, for the first part of her life, you can imagine her being really bored. One of the only ways Oprah got to be entertained was by acting and putting on a show for an audience. However, the audience was a bunch of farm animals. Oprah Winfrey was taught very strictly by her grandma. At the age of 2, she already knew how to read. Most children in the world today do not know how to read until the ages of 6 or 7. Due to this, when Oprah was about 4 and was able to head to kindergarten, she wrote a note to the teacher saying she was too advanced so she gotta head to first grade. The next year Oprah skipped 2nd grade up to 3rd! When Oprah was about 9 years old, her grandma Hattie Mae(Presley) Lee died on February 27th, 1963. At this time, Oprah has already returned home to her mother. This was when Oprah was about 6 years old. She joined her 2 half brothers. They lived in a Milwaukee Ghetto, however this was an extremely dangerous and a non wealthy place. When Oprah was 12 years old, she was forced to go live with her father. Now she lives in Nashville, Tennessee. Oprah started presenting speeches to people. These people could have been on the street, in a church and more. One time, Oprah went to go present a speech to a church, and she got paid $500! After that moment, she knew that she wanted to be "paid-to-talk". Oprah was in a very good mental state at her dads as she was healthy and not in a poor and dangerous neighborhood. Soon after Oprah has been with her father, her mother demands that she come back to this old, rusty, unsafe place. When she came back, Oprah's happiness dropped. This is because at her mom's place in Milwaukee, starting at the age of nine, Oprah has been sexually abused. The worst part about this was that it was from men that her mother and family trusted causing no one to believe her. Her mother at the time could not provide much supervision due to the fact of her unpredictable jobs. After many years of Oprah being treated terribly, the mother decided that it was best for her to go back to Nashville, Tennessee with her father.
